Match Report
On the first 15’s match of the season, Mother’s faced off against Christendom College in a tough match that ended with Mother’s on top.
Through quick hands and smart decisions by Mother’s, David Zamojda quickly put a try in at the 2:54 mark. Christendom played strong offense and defense with the ball changing possession for the next fourteen minutes of the match. Mother’s took a penalty within the 22 meter mark which Christendom took full advantage of going for a 3 point kick.
Shortly after veteran Andrew LaMarca followed up with a try of his own at the 21:45 mark with solid ball carrying. Unfortunately after this, LaMarca was yellow carded for an illegal tackle shortly after and Mother’s played a man down for 10 minutes. Christendom took full advantage of this and pressed hard on the offense continually working the defensive structure of Mary Washington. At the 28:40 minute mark, Jose Reyes from Mother’s hit a ruck hard and drew yet another yellow card leaving Mother’s playing two men down.
In response, Christendom scored a quick try at the 31:50 mark that went unconverted leaving Mother’s trailing by 3 points. Strategic team management from the coaching staff of UMW put Aaron Bensink on the field who quickly scored a try with smart decisions on offense leaving the score at 10-8 to Mother’s at the 34:26 mark. Not leaving anything to chance, Christendom made swift work of UMW’s defense and ended the half with a converted try making the game 10-15; Christendom leading.
The start of the second half began with Christendom making smart offensive decisions to score yet another converted try making the game 22-10. Even though UMW was working hard in the set pieces, Christendom drew another penalty within range of kicking. Christendom made a solid decision and took the penalty kick for yet another three points. At the 48:00 mark, UMW was trailing, 25-10. From this moment on, UMW turned it around. With smart substitutions they were able to put down another THREE tries in quick succession thanks to Theo Felder, Alec Charoenthep, and senior Philip Harrison; all converted by hooker Theo Felder. This put the score at 25-31 to UMW.
The last minutes of the match saw many rookie players from UMW take the field to allow much ball movement on offense and strong defense in tight moments. The last try of the match ended with freshman Seamus Brennan scoring a try in a strong try line drive that allowed Theo Felder to slot one last conversion. The game ended with UMW winning 38-25 for their first 15’s victory of the spring season. Man of the Match goes to Alec Charoenthep for outstanding work on defense.
