UMW Men’s Rugby came up short in their quest for a second D1AA National Championship, falling to Bowling Green by one point on Sunday.
After smother West Chester on Saturday by over 50 points, UMW started strong but lost 4 players to injuries before the 60 minute mark and could not recover
UMW went up on a Joseph Callery try under the posts after many phases early. After a lot of hard tackling and many phases Harry Masters sneaks in for a try at 15 min mark. Aidan Gallagher converted making it 14-0 UMW.
Bowling Green then pickked a pass off UMW run and scored in corner at 18 minutes, they missed the conversion. Aidan Gallagher then converted a 25 meter penalty after Bowling Green fouled at a breakdown. UMW’s defense was holding until the Bowling Green two made a nice run off a UMW turnover scores and scored a converted try.
Bowling Green followed that up with a converted try to the right of the posts. UMW came right back with Joe Callery scoring on the left side after a bunch of phases from UMW’s pack and a long back line run. Aidan missed the conversion and the teams went into half at 22-17 UMW with the advantage.
With Injuries mounting Bowling Green scored a quick try to make it 26-22. Bowling Green received a yellow card, UMW took advantage and scored a converted try to make it 29-26. Bowling Green responded with a converted try at the 60 minute mark, and then another soon after. Down 40-29 UMW, depleted by injuries to their key players, took 3 points on a penalty kick to cut the lead to 8. UMW continued to press and was rewarded with a penalty try making it a one point game but ultimately time ran out on the second half comeback. Tim Brown noted that Bowling Green put forth a great effort, but lamented the amount of injuries UMW suffered.
With the loss UMW finishes the fall with two loses, undefeated conference play, and a national semi finals appearance.
